The Department of Modern Languages at Kansas State University is seeking a Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) for the Italian program beginning in August 2014.
US applicants for the position will need to have a BA in Italian, applied linguistics or secondary education (foreign language acquisition) plus have experience living/studying in Italy for an extended period and have a GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale or GPA of 3.0 in the last 60 hours of coursework; Italian applicants must hold an Italian laurea in lingua moderna (English) or Italian; pedagogia or scienza della formazione; or hold a US BA in the fields previously stated. Native or near-native fluency in Italian is required. The GTA will complete a Masters in Second Language Acquisition – Teaching English as a Foreign Language. Length of appointment: 2 academic years.
GTA positions normally carry a 3-course teaching load per academic year, however, for this position, the TA will co-teach Italian 1 and 2 with the instructor of record and will lead discussion labs (small groups of 4 – 6 students) for Italian 1 and 2 in addition to working with the Italian Club, grading, research, their graduate courses, etc.
The position provides a stipend of $10,800 per academic year (9 months) and includes tuition ($8,900 out-of-state) but does not include the cost of textbooks and student fees.
Candidates need to have knowledge of and apply brain-based learning models to their teaching; use a communicative pedagogical approach; and, be able to adapt their instruction style to the learning styles of the students (i.e., Multiple Intelligence theory).

The Italian program at K-State is growing with the establishment of a Minor going into effect this year. For the past two years, the Italian courses have seen a steady enrollment with approximately 120 students per academic year in four levels. For the 2014 – 2015 academic year we will begin offering 6 levels of Italian. Enrollment in Italian 1 and 2 is between 24 – 28 students per course per semester. Only one section of each level is offered per semester.
Kansas State University was the first land grant university in the United States and its academic programs are among the best in the nation. Manhattan Kansas is a community of approx. 60,000 with university enrollment of approx. 23,000. A small but vibrant Italian community exist locally with Italians working in the engineering, philosophy and mathematics departments and we have Italian graduate students in human nutrition, veterinary science, and viral biology.
